who's ready to learn about vowels our
vowels are a e i o u
you may have heard y become a vowel
sometimes but we are going to learn that
later
vowels are in every word and every
syllable they also have multiple sounds
but today we are going to focus on what
we call the short sound
when we are practicing our reading and
spelling you may see this symbol above a
vowel
to me it kind of looks like a weak
Bridge
this is going to tell your brain hey
this makes the short sound
what are the short sounds of these
vowels well let's learn
I'm so excited to grow my brain with you
when learning and practicing our sounds
use the hand movements in the video as
you're saying the sound to help your
brain make connections faster and easier
it sure does love a multi-sensory
experience
we are going to say the sound
a word that begins with the sound and
then the letter name
this is our first vowel a
a says Ah go ahead and pick an apple and
as you take a bite say ah Apple a
like an apple astronaut and ax
this is letter e
get out your elephant trunk for Eddie
the elephant
now say e Eddie e
like in the words end or even an Eddy of
water
some Learners like to think of the short
e as a swirly like an Eddy of water in
which case you can still practice
with your finger making a swirl in the
air
next we have I I says if
we are going to itch our leg
maybe your arm or your face you choose
now we're going to say I
like in the words Igloo or ick
this is letter o
o
says Ah like an olive
we are going to draw an olive or a
circle in the sky and say
ah Olive o
some words that start with o are octopus
are otter
finally we have you you says uh
make a U with your hand and say ah upper
you
like in
umbrella or under
vowels can be tricky so practicing this
a few times a week will help your brain
make the connections it needs to be more
successful in your literacy Adventures
great job
thank you
